In the nineteenth century the common laborer,not being able to afford the jeweled timepiece of the upper class,nevertheless satisfied his desire for status by acquiring a pocket watch with an engraved lid and dangling chain. It could function as a testimonial to both the owner’s ability to tell time and the fact that he was on his way up the social ladder.
